1. The Indefinite Article a/an

·    We use the indefinite article

1.   to make generalizations

A dictionary is a useful reference book. 

 

2. to classify or describe, often with an adjective

                        Coober Peddy is a hot, dry place.

 

                        3. the first time a countable noun is mentioned

                         I ate a banana.

                        4. with people’s jobs

                   5. in some expressions with numbers

 2. The Definite Article the

      We use the definite article

1.   to refer again to something which has already been mentioned.

2.   with plural states and countries

        the Netherlands    the USA

 

3.   with mountain ranges, oceans, seas and rivers

         the Alps      the Mediterranean Sea    the Mississippi

 

4.   with the names of theatres, cinemas and hotels

        the Samsun Büyük Hotel

 

5.   with parts of the day

        Did they arrive in the morning or in the afternoon.

 

6.   with superlatives

         It was the best holiday ever.

 

7.   when only one such things exist

         Where has the sun gone?

 

8.   with musical instruments / with inventions

         She plays the guitar. The computer has changed its design.

 

9.   when others know what we are referring to

         We’ll meet at the usual place.

 

10.        with means of transport

         I think I’d rather take the bus.

 

11.        with adjective used as a noun

         the old        the rich

 

12.        with species of animals

         The eagle dives much faster.

 


3. The Zero Article

       We use no (zero) article

1.   with plural countable nouns used in a general sense

         Dictionaries are useful reference books.

 

2.   with uncountable nouns used in a general sense

         Does she take sugar in her coffee.

 

3.   with abstract nouns used in a general sense

         Love is more important than fame.

 

4.   with most streets, cities, and countries

         I live in Boyabat in the north of Turkey.

 

5.   with games and sports

         I play football every Saturday.

 

6.   with languages and subjects

         She’s studying English and maths.

 

7.   with meals

         We had a pizza for dinner.

 

8.   with the words school, college, university, hospital, home, church,… when we don’t mean a particular one

         He is at school.

         The thief was sent to prison for ten years.
