PAST SIMPLE

 

1. Usage : to talk about complete actions in the past

            The Egyptians built the pyramids.

 

 

2. We often use it with past time adverbials such as AGO, YESTERDAY, LAST MOTH , IN 1975, … to talk about events which occurred at a definite point of time.

 

 

3. Form :

            Positive : S + V2 + O + …

                        He   bought   his motorbike   yesterday.

            S            V2                             O                 Past time adv.             

           

Negative : S + didn’t + V1 + O + …

 

Question : Did + S + V1 + O + …

 

4. To form the positive past simple of regular verbs (V2)

            a. we often add –ed    walk >> walked

            b. if the verbs end in –e , we add –d  love >> loved

            c. if the infinitive(V1) ends in a consonant +y, we delete y and add –ied      study >> studied

d. if the infinitive ends in a stressed syllable of one vowel and one consonant (not Y or W), we double the consonant.              clap >> clapped    stop  >> stopped

 

5. Many verbs are irregular

go >> went            come >>came             buy >>            bought             do >>  did

catch >> caught     put >> put                   give >>gave                get >>  got

say  >> said            have >>had                 pay >> paid                 leave >>left

tell >> told             make >>made             wear >>wore              fall >> fell

cost >> cost            hear >>heard              see >> saw                 run >> ran

find >> found         feel >>felt                   think >>thought          teach >>taught

spend >>spent
