REFLEXIVE PRONOUNS

Aşağıdaki tabloda en sağ kolonda gözüken zamirler "reflexive pronouns" olarak adlandırılır ve Türkçe'de "kendim", "kendisi", kendimiz" gibi anlamlara gelir.

Aşağıdaki Türkçe cümleye bakın.

- Beni bıçakla kestim.

Bu cümle yanlıştır, çünkü bu cümlede "beni" yerine "kendimi" kelimesi kullanılmalıdır. Şimdi aşağıdaki İngilizce cümleye bakın.

- I cut me with a knife.

Bu cümle de yanlıştır. "Me" beni ve bana anlamlarına geldiğinden burada kullanılması gereken reflexive pronoun "myself" olmalıdır.

- I cut myself with a knife. (Kendimi bıçakla kestim.)

Aşağıda reflexive pronoun'ların kullanımlarına ilişkin örnekler verilmiştir.

- She fell off her bicycle and hurt herself. (Bisikletinden düştü ve kendini incitti.)
- I sometimes talk to myself. (Bazen kendimle konuşurum.)
- He saw himself in the mirror. (Kendisini aynada gördü.)
- They paid for themselves. (Kendi hesaplarını ödediler.)
 

Reflexive pronoun ne zaman kullanılır?
Reflexive pronoun üç temel durumda kullanılır.


- When the subject and object are the same
  (Özne ve nesne aynı olduğunda)

I hurt myself.(Kendimi incittim) (kendi kendimi)
The band call themselves "Dire Straits". (Grup kendine "Dire Straits" diyor.
He shot himself. (Kendini vurdu) (kendi kendini)

- As the object of a preposition, referring to the subject
  (Özneyi gösteren bir edatın nesnesi olarak)

I bought a present for myself.
She did it by herself (=alone). Kendi kendine yaptı. (=tek başına)
That man is talking to himself.

- When you want to emphasize the subject
  (Özneyi vurgulamak istediğiniz durumlarda)

I'll do it myself. (No-one else will help me.)
They ate all the food themselves. (No-one else had any.)
