USED TO

 

1. Usage :  With USED TO we refer to habits or situations which were true in the past but are not true now.

             I used to walk to school but now I take the bus.

          usually walked to school

 

             My sister didn’t use to like jazz but she does now.

 

2. USED TO refers to the past. There is no present form or future form.

 

3. Form :

               Positive :  S + used to + V1 + O + …

                                      I        used to                walk             to school.

 

               Negative :  S + didn’t use to + V1 + O + …

                                  My sister       didn’t use to                 like       jazz   

 

               Question :  Did + S + use to + V1 + O + …

                                                  Did           he      use to              wear       glasses?  

 

                                        Yes, he did. / No, he didn’t.

 

BE USED TO

 

1. Usage :  With BE USED TO we refer to an activity or situation which is (or was) familiar to us.

               I am used to driving on the left now.

                   Driving on the left isn’t strange for me now.

 

                   I wasn’t used to driving on the left when I first came to Britain.

                   Driving on the left was strange for me when I first came to Britain.

 

 

2. BE USED TO can refer to the present or the past.
